Many of my favorite stories have found their way into my books. The Talking Vegetables is a Dan story from Liberia retold with storyteller Won-Ldy Paye and illustrated with stunning paintings by Seattle artist Julie Paschkis. Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile, created by the same team, is a trickster tale from Liberia. Julie Paschkis also painted dazzling pictures for Head, Body, Legs: A Story from Liberia. Why Leopard Has Spots: Dan Stories from Liberia is a collection of stories retold with Won-Ldy Paye and illustrated by Ashley Bryan. Numerous awards have been garnered by these books. Two other picture books of multicultural folk tales, The Sea Serpent's Daughter: A Brazilian Legend (Spanish edition: La Hija de la Serpiente Marina: Leyenda Brasileña) and Finist the Falcon: A Russian Legend feature brave young women. You can buy these books at your local independent bookstore. Please visit BookSense.com to find the independent bookseller nearest you and support your local business.
As a teacher, I loved telling stories to my classes. I collected my favorites in Teacher's Read-Aloud Anthology, volumes K-9. For students just learning to read, I retold 7 multicultural folk tales including Why the Moon Is In the Sky: An African Folk Tale, illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon.
The Talking Vegetables The villagers are planting a farm, but Spider refuses to help. He has plenty of rice to eat, so why should he do all that hard work? Then one day Spider gets tired of plain rice and decides to pick some of the delicious produce. Imagine his surprise when the vegetables start talking! |

Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile One morning, Mrs. Chicken took her bath in a puddle. "Cluck, cluck," she said proudly. "What a pretty chicken I am!" Mrs. Chicken can't see her wings in the puddle, so she walks down to the river. She doesn't know that Crocodile is there, waiting for her dinner. To save herself, Mrs. Chicken tells Crocodile that they are sisters. But how can a speckled chicken and a green-skinned crocodile be related? Mrs. Chicken had better prove that they can, and fast, because Crocodile is getting hungrier.... |

Head, Body, Legs: A Story from Liberia Head is all alone. Body bounces along. Arms swing about, and Legs stand around. They can't do much by themselves, so they try to join together. But how? Should Head attach to the belly button? Should Legs stand on Arms? If only they can work together, everything will be perfect. Straight from the oral tradition comes this magical retelling of a creation story from Liberia. |
